Dialysis Access Lab (Part 2) 

Special Session

8:00-12:00 pm

Objective:  The dialysis access is a cornerstone for the patients to continue both Home and Incenter Dialysis. A deeper understanding of AV access and PD catheter is essential for physicians and the interdisciplinary team to care for patients and triage in the event of complications. This course will focus on physical examination and point of care evaluation of both PD catheters and AV access along with techniques to train Home HD patients and care partner on cannulation. The participants will have the opportunity to practice on both human and synthetic models using high-quality ultrasound machines supervised by experienced faculty.  Training sessions give you practical, hands-on experience.

Total duration 3 hours and 15 minutes.  The course will start with a brief didactic presentation followed by a hands-on learning experience.  This course will focus on:

  1. Techniques to Train Home HD Patients – Michelle Carver, BSN, RN
  2. Physical Examination of AV access – Vandana Dua-Niyyar, MD
  3. US Examination and Cannulation of AV Access – Nupur Gupta. MD
  4. US Evaluation of PD Catheter –  Stephen Ash, MD, FACP
